Kindergarten: LuAnn Bowein
Ms. LuAnn Bowein Joined Renaissance during the (2017-2018) academic year as a kindergarten teacher. She graduated with honors from Ottawa University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She is certified to teach K-8 in addition to ESL. Ms. Bowein is an engaged and passionate teacher with years of experience as a Reading Instructor. She taught Kindergarten, 1st grade as well as preschool. She taught general equation students in addition to working with students who are educationally challenged. We are looking forward to an exciting year with Ms. Bowein . Her expertise is sure to add a lot to our team!
1st Grade: Leslie Scantlin
Ms. Leslie Scantlin recently joined the elementary team to teach 1st grade. Ms. Scantlin brings along with her almost 30 years of teaching experience. She holds a wide range of TX Teaching certifications including: EC-4 Generalist, 4-8 Generalist, Social Studies 8-12, English Language Arts 8-12, Special Education PK -12 and ESL K-12. She holds a bachelor’s of science in Secondary Social Studies in addition to a Master’s degree in special Education form Louisiana State University. Ms. Scantlin occupied several positions over the years including being an elementary homework teacher for 2nds and 3rd grade, serving as a special education/ dyslexia specialist K-12 and working as a teacher trainer during the summer. She is trained in the areas of: Project Based Instruction, Brain Based Instruction, the 6+1 Writing Traits; LEP Instruction, Differentiated Instruction and much more. With her wide range or expertise and certifications, Ms. Scantlin will be a very valuable resource, not only to the grade she teaches but to the whole school. We are looking forward to a very productive year with her.
2nd Grade: Andrea Pappas
Ms. Andrea Pappas joined Renaissance this year as our 2nd grade homeroom teacher. She holds a Master’s degree in elementary education. She has years of experience teaching lower elementary classes all the way to being an instructor at Austin Community College. She taught 4th grade English Language Arts, in additional to being a 2nd/3rd grade homeroom teacher at a charter school for 5 years. She is trained in differentiated instruction in addition to meeting state standards and STAAR test administration. She taught adult ESL classes and worked as an Intermediate Writing tutor at Austin Community College. She comes from a diverse background herself which makes her a perfect fit for our multicultural school setting.
3rd Grade: Eileen Keller
Ms. Keller will be teaching 3rd grade this year. She has over 12 years of teaching experience in Montessori as well as standard school settings. She has 30 years of experience working with children of all ages in different capacities. She has taught kindergarten – 4th grade using common core state standards in Arizona. She has recently completed her teaching certification program for the state of Texas. She has a Bachelor degree from Ohio State University. She is energetic and innovative and we are looking forward to a great year in 3rd grade with her.
4th & 5th Grade Math & Science: Elizabeth Page
Ms. Page brings along with her over 25 years of teaching experience in Massachusetts and Texas. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She holds long term commitments to her work place. For the past 10 years she worked in the same elementary school, 9 of which were teaching 4th grade. She was a 4th grade team leader within her school for 4 years, a vertical science team leader for 3 years and a Science Fair Organizer for 3 years. She is recognized for her multiple contributions to her previous workplaces including holding after school STAAR tutoring sessions and achieving great results. Her teaching skills were enhanced through participation in a wide range of professional development sessions including: Stemscope, Digging into Data, Technology Updates, DRA Reading Assessment, PBIS Behavioral, Project Based Learning and much more. We are looking forward to putting her expertise to a great use at Renaissance.
4th & 5th Language Arts & Social Studies: Tanzia Amreen
Ms.Tanzia Amreen joined Renaissance this year to teach English Language Arts and Social Studies to grades 4 and 5. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Minesota. She completed her teaching certificate in 4th -8th Language Arts from the University of TX, Dallas. Ms. Amreen was a distinguished student who was on the Dean’s List through her undergraduate years. She has experience teaching Language Arts and social studies in other Islamic Schools in Dallas. She also held the position of a Curriculum Coordinator at a weekend school in TX. Ms. Amreen volunteered as a tutor at a public middle school for a few months. Her relevant experience, training, and certification as well as familiarity with Islamic School Culture are sure to be an asset to Renaissance. We are looking forward to her contributions and having her as role model for our students.
Elementary Physical Education: Cathleen Carothers
Ms.Cathleen Carothers brings with her a wide range of expertise as well as a high degree of relevant educational background. She holds a master’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies with a thesis focus on Leisure time Physical Activities and the Perceived Quality of life. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science.
Ms. Carothers holds a number of fitness certifications including: AFAA Primary Group Exercise Fitness Instructor, ASCM Personal Fitness Trainer, Turbo Kickboxing, 24 Cycle and Zumba fitness. Additionally, Ms. Carothers has completed training in the following areas: Yoga Teacher Training, Pilates, Soccer Coaching, and Volleyball coaching and Track only to list a few. Ms.Carothers has a lot of hands on experience both in school, university and corporate fitness settings. She is currently teaching PE in a private school in Austin. She also taught physical education classes for the Upward Bound program at the University of NORTH TX. While working on her master’s degree, she held the position of assistant to the campus fitness director managing and organization the administration of a wide range of fitness programs for students and faculty. She worked as a group fitness instructor and health promoter in several corporate settings. She took multiple classes in child development and behavior and classroom management.

Elementary Arabic Teacher/Department Head: Jilali Kattass
Mr. Kattass graduated with Teaching Certification from the Teacher Training Center in Taza, Morocco. He taught Arabic for nine years in various elementary and middle schools in Morocco, where he focused on the development of Arabic curriculum standards. He has 7 years of experience teaching Arabic in the United States and has been the head of the Arabic department for 4 years.
Elementary School Arabic Teacher: Laila Khater
Ms. Laila received her Bachelors Degree from Al Al-Bayt University in English Language and Literature with a minor in Education from Amman, Jordan. She taught English for elementary classes for one year in Amman, Jordan. Ms. Laila joined Renaissance in 2012 and has now earned her teacher certification in Arabic.
Elementary Islamic Studies & Quran teacher: Abeer Mourdi
Ms. Mouradi holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Her areas of training include developmental psychology and behavior management. She has attended several post graduate training programs including but are not limited to: Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Domains and Multiple Intelligences Theory, Applying Lawrence Kohlberg‘s Model for School Discipline, and Bully- Free Schools: A Circle of Support for Learning. Ms Abeer is a native Arabic Speaker and has been teaching Arabic /Quran and Islamic studies in an Islamic School in Michigan for the past 3 years using innovative, interactive and age appropriate teaching techniques. Her experience in classroom management and developmental psychology is sure to enrich our school and our students.
