Head of the Elementary Department / Arabic Teacher 2nd Grade –High School: Ms. Laila Khater
Ms. Khater joined Renaissance Academy in 2012. She holds a state of TX Certification to Teach Arabic as a Second Language (ASL). She received her bachelor’s degree from Al Al-Bayt University in English Language and Literature with a minor in Education from Amman, Jordan. She taught English to elementary classes for one year in Amman, Jordan. Ms. Khater teaches Arabic from 2nd grade through middle and high school. She is a passionate, creative and dedicated teacher. She is extremely organized, artistic and talented. She finds ways to bring fun into her classroom and reach students with different learning styles. During the academic year of 2015 -2016, Ms. Khater was appointed as the Head of the Elementary Department for her proven record of reliability and the professionalism serving Renaissance Academy for 4 years before her well-deserved appointment. She is also the mother of three amazing Renaissance students.
Kindergarten Homeroom Teacher: Ms. LuAnn Bowein
Ms. LuAnn Bowein Joined Renaissance during the (2017-2018) academic year as a kindergarten teacher. She graduated with honors from Ottawa University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She is certified to teach K-8 in addition to ESL. Ms. Bowein is an engaged and passionate teacher with years of experience as a Reading Instructor. She taught Kindergarten, 1st grade as well as preschool. She taught general education students in addition to working with students who are educationally challenged. Ms. Bowein earned herself a reputation for accountability, structure, and creativity since she joined Renaissance.
Kindergarten Assistant: Ms. Huda Barhoom
Ms. Huda is a parent of 4 wonderful Renaissance Academy students. She came to the United States from Canada where she completed classes in early childhood education. Ms. Huda joined Renaissance last year and offered her dedicated service as volunteer 1st-grade assistant. She has been a tremendous asset to the school. She joins us in an official capacity as of the 2019-2020 academic year as a kindergarten assistant. Ms. Huda can best be described as a Peace Inspiring Character. Such calm personality is sure to come in handy in kindergarten
1st Grade Homeroom teacher: Ms. Taylor Hill
Ms. Hill joined the Renaissance during the 2019-2020 academic as a 1st-grade homeroom teacher. She has several years of teaching experience teaching ages from preschool through 4th grade. Ms. Hill holds Texas Teaching Certification in EC-6th (Early Childhood – 6th grade) besides ESL (English as a 2nd Language). Ms. Hill holds a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education In addition to a master’s degree in the Arts of Teaching from the University of Arkansas. She is also an accomplished artist with a passion for teaching by doing and hands-on activities.
1st grade assistant: Ms. Fayeza Rahman
Ms. Rahman joined Renaissance Academy during the academic year of 2018-2019 as a Pre-K classroom assistant. This year she moved up to the elementary division. MS. Rahman has experience teaching elementary classes with another private school before joining Renaissance. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in addition to a Para Educator Certificate from Austin Community College.
2nd-grade Homeroom Teacher: Ms. Catherine Christy
Ms. Christy joined us as a 2nd teacher during 2019-2020 academic year. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Florida State University in addition to an associate degree in Education. Ms. Christy has experience teaching kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. She is highly proficient in classroom management. She has a special talent for nurturing young minds and helping struggling students meet their goals. She believes in encouraging moral development, a strong character, respect for others, self-discipline, and independence.
3rd Grade A Homeroom Teacher: Ms. Janie Paz
Ms. Paz joined Renaissance Academy during the 2019-2020 academic year. She will be teaching 3rd grade. She carries under her built 27 years of teaching experience in public schools. She taught elementary grades from 1st through 5th in addition to being a Language Arts specialist and a Literacy Coach. Ms. Paz. Holds a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from TX A & M University. She is the winner of several prestigious awards including Building Teacher of the year Lagos Elementary, Manor ISD as well as District Finalist for District teacher of the year, Manor ISD
3rd Grade B Homeroom Teacher : Mr. Abelardo Lopez
Mr. Lopez joined Renaissance during 2019-2020 academic year as a 3rd teacher. He holds a master’s degree in Reading Instruction as well as a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from The University of Texas-Pan American, Edinburg, Texas. Mr. Lopez has more than 15 years of experience teaching a wide range of elementary grades in the area of Reading. He served as a Coordinator of the Gifted and Talented program with Weslaco I.S.D. Mr. Lopez is a published researcher and a presenter in multiple conferences. He also served as a South Texas I.S.D. Education Foundation Board Member
4th, 5th, and 6th grade Language Arts & 4th and 5th Social Studies : Ms. Tanzia Amreen
Ms. Tanzia Amreen joined Renaissance during the 2017-2018 academic year. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Minnesota. She completed her teaching certificate in 4th -8th Language Arts from the University of TX, Dallas. Ms. Amreen was a distinguished student who was on the Dean’s List through her undergraduate years. She has experience teaching Language Arts and social studies in other Islamic Schools in Dallas. She also held the position of a Curriculum Coordinator at a weekend school in TX. Ms. Amreen volunteered as a tutor at a public middle school for a few months. Her relevant experience, training, and certification, as well as familiarity with Islamic School Culture, are sure to be an asset to Renaissance. Ms. Amreen’s students have always achieved jaw-dropping results in the STAAR test for two consecutive years with most of her students earning a mastery level.
4th and 5th grade Math and Science Teacher : Ms. Jacqueline Botto
Ms. Botto Joined Renaissance in the 2019-2020 academic year. She holds a bachelor’s degree with Earth and Life Science Specialization form TX State University. San Marcos in addition to an associate degree in phycology. Ms. Botto has more than 20 years of teaching experience including teaching College Prep classes to grades 3, 4 and 5 as well as Middle School. She holds Teacher certification in English as a Second Language, Math, and Reading. She is trained in Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System as well as INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) Programs.
PK-12 Physical Education: Ms. Mia Duran
Ms. Duran joined Renaissance Academy at the end of the 2018-2019 academic year. She graduated with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science with an emphasis on all level physical activities. She holds EC-12 Physical Education Certification in addition to 7-12 English Certification. She is a member of several educational organizations including Association of Texas Professional Educators, Texas Classroom Teachers Association, and Blended Learning Universe
